Bangladesh Misses Hat-trick SAFF Title After Loss to India

Bangladesh’s quest for a historic hat-trick of titles in the SAFF Women‍‍`s Championship 2026 came to a disappointing end on Saturday. In a high-stakes final held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa, the defending champions were defeated 3-1 by India. While the first half offered a competitive display of football with a 1-1 scoreline, the second half saw India seize control through aggressive play, ultimately ending Bangladesh‍‍`s hopes of retaining the regional trophy.

Under head coach Peter Butler, Bangladesh entered the final with a tactical setup intended to neutralize India’s attacking threats. Unlike their lackluster performance during the group stages, the team showed significantly more grit and determination. Bangladesh created several scoring chances early on, with Tahura missing two crucial opportunities in the 12th and 14th minutes. Another attempt in the 41st minute narrowly missed the post, denying Bangladesh a potential lead. Against the run of play, India’s Piyari Sasa opened the scoring in the 42nd minute. However, Bangladesh responded immediately, with Ritu Porna netting an equalizer off a precise pass from Tahura during stoppage time, heading into the break with the score tied at 1-1.

The momentum shifted significantly just one minute into the second half. India regained the lead when Sanfida headed the ball into the net, placing Bangladesh under immediate pressure. Desperate to level the game, Shamsunnahar Junior attempted a header in the 51st minute, but it sailed just over the crossbar. As the game progressed, India’s defensive organization and goalkeeping heroics thwarted several Bangladeshi attempts to equalize. The decisive blow came in the 81st minute, when a defensive lapse allowed Lindakom to score, effectively sealing the victory for India and extinguishing Bangladesh’s dreams of a third consecutive title.

Despite a late and spirited effort to reduce the deficit, Bangladesh could not find a way past the Indian defense. The loss marks a difficult end to a campaign that had promised much for the side. While the team displayed improved tactical awareness and fighting spirit compared to previous matches, missed opportunities in front of goal and defensive vulnerabilities in critical moments proved costly. Bangladesh will leave Goa as runners-up, having narrowly missed the chance to make history with a three-peat. This experience, however, serves as a significant learning curve for the squad as they look to reorganize for future international assignments.
