UEFA Nations League Knockout and Relegation Rules

The operational pathway governing qualification, relegation, and knockout progression in the 2026-27 UEFA Nations League entered a decisive phase on Tuesday as national teams concluded the fourth round of group stage fixtures. The eight squads finishing within the top two positions of the four League A pools will advance directly to the home-and-away quarter-finals scheduled for the March 2027 international window. The aggregate victors of those ties will progress to the four-team finals tournament in June 2027, featuring single-leg semi-finals on June 9 and 10, preceding the championship decider on Sunday, June 13.

Portugal stand as the sole nation to have mathematically verified their place in the last eight.

England approach their Tuesday evening fixture against the Czech Republic at Wembley in second position within Group A3 under manager Thomas Tuchel. A positive result leaves the English squad positioned to book a quarter-final berth ahead of November‍‍`s final group fixtures against Croatia and Spain. Concurrently, Spain will secure progression from the same section should they defeat Croatia and the Czech Republic fail to win in London. In Group A1, France and Italy occupy the qualifying berths with Belgium trailing closely, while the Netherlands and Greece head Group A2 ahead of Germany.

The promotion and relegation mechanisms operate under strict divisional tiers.

Group winners across Leagues B and C achieve automatic advancement to the superior division for the subsequent international cycle. Second-place finishers in those leagues will enter two-legged promotion-relegation play-offs against the third-placed nations descending from the league directly above them. Teams finishing bottom of their respective groups in Leagues A and B face direct relegation, accompanied by the defeated sides from the spring play-off fixtures.

A fundamental restructuring of the Nations League schedule will alter these parameters ahead of the 2028-29 edition.

UEFA will consolidate the tournament architecture into three expanded leagues, permanently dissolving the fourth tier. Consequently, every participant competing in League D is assured automatic promotion to League C, while no nations residing in League C will face relegation at the conclusion of the ongoing cycle.

Regional prospects across the British Isles remain contested heading into the closing rounds. Wales confront a difficult qualification path in Group A4 alongside Denmark and Norway, while Northern Ireland lead Group B2 having preserved four consecutive clean sheets. Scotland host Slovenia at Hampden Park seeking to retain pressure behind group leaders Switzerland in League B1.

The decisive fifth and sixth rounds of group competition will conclude during the mid-November international break.
