Max Verstappen takes first win of 2026 at Sepang

Max Verstappen secured his maiden victory of the 2026 Formula One season on Sunday, managing a heavily disrupted and rain-affected race at the Sepang circuit. The Dutch driver overcame a difficult getaway from pole position to outlast his rivals in shifting weather conditions. Behind him, Lewis Hamilton delivered an extraordinary recovery drive for Ferrari, fighting through the field from 18th place to claim the final spot on the podium.

The championship race has taken another dramatic turn.

Having topped every segment of qualifying, Verstappen briefly surrendered the advantage to Mercedes before systematically rebuilding his authority over the treacherous asphalt. Kimi Antonelli capitalized on the initial chaos to lead early laps, eventually guiding his car home in second place to build an 84-point cushion at the summit of the championship table. His teammate George Russell endured contrasting fortunes, as an engine failure halted his machine five laps from the flag while running comfortably inside the top three.

Ferrari had initially placed itself in severe difficulty after rolling the dice on slick tyres during early rain. Hamilton plummeted through the order alongside teammate Charles Leclerc, but both drivers demonstrated sharp racecraft on intermediate rubber to salvage significant points, with Leclerc crossing the line fourth. Red Bull reserve graduate Isack Hadjar claimed fifth position despite serving a pre-race grid drop, while McLaren‍‍`s Oscar Piastri rose from a pit-lane start to take sixth.

Liam Lawson gained seven places in the opening laps to steer his car to seventh, followed by two-time world champion Fernando Alonso, who converted an aggressive strategy into eighth place for Aston Martin. Lando Norris slid off into the gravel traps during a late safety-car period to drop down to ninth, leaving Arvid Lindblad to capture the final championship point in tenth position. Further back, Nico Hulkenberg missed the top ten by a single spot, finishing clear of Lance Stroll and Franco Colapinto.

Williams driver Carlos Sainz saw his afternoon unravel following contact with Gabriel Bortoleto, leaving him 17th after the Brazilian received an in-race penalty. Valtteri Bottas had earlier triggered the first neutralization of the contest when his gamble on dry rubber ended in the gravel on lap nine.
