Sri Lanka Stun England With Second-Highest ODI Run Chase in Rawalpindi

Sri Lanka pulled off a stunning victory against England in Rawalpindi by chasing down a target of 430 with one ball to spare. The match became the second-highest successful run chase in men’s one-day international cricket. Only the famous 438-run match played two decades ago surpasses this total.

Harry Brook powered his way to the fastest double hundred in ODI history for England, reaching the landmark in 114 deliveries. He surpassed Shubman Gill’s 117-ball effort for India against the West Indies recorded three weeks prior. Brook became the first player in history to score a double century in a one-day international and finish on the losing side.

Brook displayed remarkable footwork throughout his innings of 202, executing ramp, scoop, and slice shots behind the wicket. Will Jacks contributed an unbeaten 66 runs from 30 balls as England built their massive total, and Tom Banton added a fifty at the top of the order to continue his strong form in the series.

England made a team change before the match, leaving out Adil Rashid in favour of left-arm spinner Liam Dawson. Dunith Wellalage was the only bowler to successfully contain Brook, conceding no boundaries to the English batter during his spell.

Sri Lanka faced an early collapse after losing captain Kusal Mendis without facing a ball to a run out, followed by Kamindu Mendis being bowled by Josh Tongue. Reduced to 24 for two, Pavan Rathnayake and Avishka Fernando rescued the innings with a 166-run partnership for the third wicket.

Rathnayake top-scored for Sri Lanka with 130 runs from 87 deliveries. Fernando contributed 97 runs before returning a catch to Jamie Overton. Dasun Shanaka struck an aggressive 97 that included eight sixes after struggling with his bowling earlier in the match.

Rathnayake and Shanaka both fell in the closing stages as England fought back into contention. Janith Liyanage ultimately secured the win for Sri Lanka, hitting a six in the final over to leave England winless in the tri-series.
