Microsoft Withdraws from Essex AI Datacentre Project

Microsoft has pulled out of an artificial intelligence datacentre development in Essex due to concerns over electricity supplies. The decision leaves the high-profile British project without its primary anchor tenant.

The initiative by UK firm Nscale was slated to open in Loughton next year. Ministers lauded the facility as the largest of its kind across the country when the national AI strategy was unveiled last year.

Datacentres function as the central nervous system for AI applications like chatbots. But the Loughton site faced delays last month after electricity network constraints threatened a lengthy wait for grid connection.

Microsoft informed the developer that it was ending its agreement for the Essex site. The technology giant had been expected to serve as the anchor customer for the sprawling facility.

The loss of Microsoft is a setback for Nscale, which has no other publicly announced customers for the Loughton datacentre. Nscale is backed by prominent technology companies, including Nvidia.

The collapse of the agreement could complicate Nscale ambitions to float on Wall Street this year. The firm had been eyeing a potential valuation of thirty-five billion dollars, equivalent to twenty-six billion pounds.

Despite the cancellation in Essex, Microsoft maintains its partnership with Nscale for a separate facility located in Norway.

A spokesperson for Nscale stated that the company remains dedicated to both the Loughton site and the wider British market. The representative added that the firm is investigating alternative electricity sources for the location alongside other potential expansion venues in the UK.

The spokesperson said the relationship with Microsoft remains strong and that regional grid challenges do not affect their other contracts.
