Anthropic Valuation Hits $965bn to Pass OpenAI

Anthropic has officially usurped OpenAI as the world’s most valuable artificial intelligence startup, marking a seismic shift in the tech industry’s power dynamics. The spectacular rise follows a massive new cash injection from top-tier private backers. This financial milestone puts a definitive dollar figure on the growing commercial and cultural prominence of its flagship product family. The fierce corporate arms race in Silicon Valley has now entered an entirely unprecedented phase of competition. The startup is now valued at a staggering $965 billion.

The San Francisco-based firm announced on Thursday that it secured $65 billion in a blockbuster series H funding round. The massive investment was led by prominent venture capital powerhouses including Altimeter Capital, Greenoaks, Dragoneer, and Sequoia Capital. This latest valuation comfortably catapults the firm past its direct rival OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. OpenAI was last valued at $852 billion during its own high-profile private fundraising round back in March.

Anthropic Chief Financial Officer Krishna Rao stated that the new funding will directly address the historic market demand the company is experiencing. The capital will also be deployed to maintain its position at the absolute research frontier and scale its enterprise products. Altimeter Capital CEO Brad Gerstner praised the rapid corporate adoption of the Claude chatbot across demanding global organizations. He noted that this commercial momentum perfectly positions the firm to lead the next phase of global AI innovation.

The company was founded in 2021 by a group of former OpenAI researchers led by CEO Dario Amodei. Since launching its signature Claude chatbot in 2023, the startup has experienced an unprecedented trajectory of growth. By March of this year, the company reported adding more than 1 million new user sign-ups every single day. Enterprise clients have increasingly turned to its models over rivals, particularly due to its superior capabilities in software coding and enterprise data processing.

Despite its commercial triumph, the startup has had to navigate complex geopolitical and regulatory hurdles in Washington. The firm recently engaged in a high-profile dispute with US President Donald Trump’s administration over national security protocols. Government officials labeled the startup a supply chain risk after the company refused to grant unrestricted military access to its deep tech tools. Amid these ongoing tensions, the firm separately unveiled its latest model upgrade, Opus 4.8, on Thursday.

This massive surge in valuation comes just ahead of anticipated public listings for the world‍‍`s most dominant tech firms. Anthropic, OpenAI, and Elon Musk’s rocket manufacturer SpaceX are all expected to debut on public stock exchanges in the near future. Financial analysts describe these upcoming listings as potentially the largest initial public offerings in corporate history. Experts point out that the specialized nature of the modern tech sector ensures that only a tiny handful of dominant players will capture the vast majority of future industry profits.
