Yemen’s Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday that it is taking field reports very seriously regarding the alleged deployment of toxic materials across battlefronts in Taiz. Officials called for an immediate inquiry to establish the exact composition of these substances. The investigation aims to document the physical effects of the materials and identify individuals responsible for procuring them.
The military stated that these allegations emerged during ongoing Houthi military actions in Taiz. These operations include sniper fire, random shelling targeting residential areas, and a strict blockade of local roadways. The siege has restricted civilian access to vital supplies such as water, food, and medicine.
Military authorities issued a direct warning to Houthi leadership against directing attacks at noncombatants and cautioned against employing prohibited methods of warfare. Armed forces reiterated that safeguarding civilians and lifting the blockade on Taiz are core duties of the state.
Officials pledged to implement necessary measures aligned with constitutional duties and international humanitarian law. The ministry appealed to the United Nations and other international bodies to intervene, asking them to address reported violations and facilitate a prompt, independent investigation into the chemical allegations.
The defense department demanded global pressure on the group to reopen transport routes to ensure unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to trapped populations. The ministry warned that commanders and perpetrators behind violence directed at civilians will face accountability.
Taiz is a central flashpoint in the protracted civil war. Government units and Houthi fighters have fought for dominance over the province for over ten years. Houthi fighters have controlled surrounding areas since 2015, maintaining severe travel restrictions that have triggered a deep humanitarian crisis.
Clashes have escalated in recent weeks as state forces, supported by the Saudi-led coalition, execute operations against Houthi positions in Taiz and neighboring regions. This renewed fighting coincides with broader hostilities between the Houthi movement and Saudi Arabia, with both parties reporting active military engagements across Yemen.
