Israel Ramps Up Lebanon Strikes: 2 Killed Amid Ceasefire Talks

As diplomatic efforts accelerate in Washington to extend a fragile ceasefire, the situation on the ground in southern Lebanon has taken a violent turn. On Thursday morning, May 14, 2026, Israeli warplanes targeted the Ezzedine residential project in the town of Srifa, killing at least two people. This surge in military activity comes just as both sides were preparing for United States-brokered negotiations, raising fears that the window for a peaceful resolution is rapidly closing.

Beyond the direct strikes, the Israeli military has significantly expanded its use of forced displacement orders. Avichay Adraee, the Israeli army’s Arabic language spokesperson, took to X (formerly Twitter) to order the immediate evacuation of eight towns and villages across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region. The list includes Libbaya, Sahmar, Taffahata, Kafr Malek, Yohmor (Bekaa), Ain Tineh, Houmin al-Fawqa, and Mazraat Sina. These orders have triggered a fresh wave of panic among civilians who have already been struggling to survive amidst the intermittent warfare that resumed in early March.

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) officially stated on Telegram that the operations were aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure. However, reports from the ground paint a grimmer picture of civilian infrastructure under fire. Lebanon’s National News Agency reported a drone strike near a vocational school located between Breqa and Zrarieh, which left one person injured. Furthermore, intense aerial bombardment has been reported in the town of Ain al-Tineh in Western Bekaa.

Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Beirut, Rory Challands, described the current phase as one of the "most intense periods of aerial bombardment in weeks." He highlighted a shift in tactics, noting frequent drone strikes targeting individual cars and motorbikes on the main coastal highway—the primary artery connecting Beirut to the south.

According to data released by Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday, the human cost of this renewed conflict is staggering. At least 2,896 people have been killed in Israeli attacks since early March 2026. What this really means is that despite the high-stakes diplomacy involving President Donald Trump and Middle Eastern intermediaries, the military momentum continues to outpace the diplomatic one. For the residents of Srifa and the surrounding villages, the "ceasefire talks" in far-off capitals feel worlds away from the reality of warplanes and forced evacuations.

With nearly 3,000 lives lost since March and talks looming, do you think these intensified strikes are a calculated move for leverage, or is the region sliding toward an all-out regional
