Bangla Academy Announces Rabindra Puraskar 2026 Winners

Bangla Academy has officially announced the recipients of the "Rabindra Puraskar 2026," honoring two distinguished personalities for their lifelong dedication to the works and music of Rabindranath Tagore. This year, Professor Nripendralal Das has been selected for his outstanding contributions to Rabindra literature, while renowned artist Bulbul Islam has been named for his excellence in Rabindra Sangeet. The announcement was formalized through a press release signed by Professor Mohammad Azam, the Director General of Bangla Academy, on Thursday evening. The award is considered one of the highest cultural honors in the country, recognizing those who preserve the legacy of the Nobel laureate.

The prestigious ceremony is scheduled to take place on May 11, 2026, which coincides with the 28th of Boishakh—the 165th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore. The event will be held at the Rabindra Chattar within the Bangla Academy premises. Both recipients will be presented with a commemorative plaque, a certificate of honor, and a prize check. This annual tradition by the academy serves to highlight the intellectual and musical depth of Tagore’s philosophy, ensuring that his influence continues to resonate with the younger generation.

Professor Nripendralal Das has been a stalwart in the field of Tagore research for decades. His scholarly articles and books have provided deep insights into the literary genius of Rabindranath, exploring themes that connect classical Bengali thought with modern global perspectives. On the other hand, Bulbul Islam is celebrated for his authentic and soulful rendition of Rabindra Sangeet. His commitment to maintaining the purity of Tagore‍‍`s compositions has made him a household name among music enthusiasts in Bangladesh and beyond. His selection reflects a lifetime of devotion to the musical heritage of Bengal.

The Rabindra Puraskar was established by Bangla Academy to encourage the study and dissemination of Tagore‍‍`s vast body of work. By honoring researchers and performers, the academy reinforces the cultural identity of the Bengali-speaking world. In addition to the award ceremony on May 11, Bangla Academy plans to host a series of discussions and cultural programs to mark the 165th birth anniversary. The announcement of these two winners has been met with widespread acclaim from the literary and cultural communities, who view the choice as a well-deserved recognition of artistic and academic merit. Ummah Kantho extends its heartiest congratulations to both Professor Das and Mr. Islam for this significant achievement.
