Spanish and Portuguese firms rush to adopt battery storage

Industrial firms across Spain and Portugal are heavily investing in battery storage systems to safeguard their operations following a massive regional blackout last year, according to BBC News. On April 28 of last year, a major power failure plunged large parts of the Iberian Peninsula into darkness for several hours, bringing manufacturing lines to an abrupt halt and causing severe financial losses. For companies such as the Spanish meat processing firm Fribin in Aragon, the sudden shutdown meant refrigeration had to be prioritized while all production lines stopped, resulting in hundreds of thousands of euros in spoiled inventory. Realizing that existing emergency systems were inadequate for prolonged outages, company leadership initiated a strategic shift toward dedicated backup power solutions.

Partially funded by European Union recovery grants, Fribin acquired an initial five-megawatt-hour battery module in June of last year and ordered a second identical module recently, bringing their total investment to approximately €1.5m. As European industries increasingly transition from fossil fuels to electricity to lower emissions, experts note that manufacturing operations have simultaneously become more vulnerable to grid disruptions. In response to these growing vulnerabilities, Spain‍‍`s commercial battery storage capacity has surged nearly sevenfold, rising from roughly 28 megawatts before last year‍‍`s blackout to 193 megawatts by April of this year, according to grid operator Red Eléctrica. Furthermore, Spain‍‍`s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy allocated €827m in EU funds in December to 133 energy storage projects, with about 80% dedicated to battery installations.

Portuguese manufacturing enterprises have similarly accelerated their transition toward robust energy storage infrastructure. Vista Alegre, Portugal‍‍`s oldest and largest porcelain manufacturer, equipped its facilities in Ílhavo with approximately two megawatt-hour storage capacity to prevent irreparable damage to continuous production kilns. Company officials noted that while the primary goal was resilience against sudden grid failures, the installed batteries also enable firms to generate additional revenue by selling surplus energy back to the general network during favorable market conditions. At Primus Ceramics near Aveiro, where a diesel generator prevented catastrophic losses during the previous year‍‍`s blackout, management is more than doubling battery capacity by the end of this year to store solar energy and ensure long-term stability.

The urgency for reliable backup power has been further amplified by recent extreme weather events, including Storm Kristin in late January, which toppled thousands of utility poles and left hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power across central Portugal. Battery suppliers report that customer expectations have evolved significantly beyond basic partial backup solutions. Commercial clients now demand advanced capabilities such as seamless power switching with zero interruption, which is particularly critical for sensitive environments like data centers and healthcare facilities. Short delivery timelines tied to strict European Union funding deadlines have also placed intense pressure on equipment suppliers to meet accelerated project schedules.

Industry analysts emphasize that integrating advanced energy storage systems represents a vital structural adaptation for the manufacturing sector amid growing climate volatility and energy market shifts. By enabling factories to buffer against network instability and optimize self-generated solar power, these investments provide essential protection against future operational shocks. As both nations continue to expand their grid storage capacities, regional businesses are positioning themselves to withstand sudden disruptions while advancing toward long-term operational sustainability.
