Six Bangladeshi peacekeepers who lost their lives while serving in the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Africa will be honored posthumously by the global organization. The fallen heroes will receive the prestigious Dag Hammarskjöld Medal during an official ceremony marking the International Day of UN Peacekeepers at the UN Headquarters in New York on June 5. UN Secretary-General António Guterres is scheduled to present the awards to the representatives of the families, recognizing the supreme sacrifice made by these individuals in the line of duty.The recognition highlights the intense volatility faced by modern peacekeepers.
The six recipients from Bangladesh are identified as Md. Jahangir Alam, Md. Sabuj Miah, Md. Masud Rana, Md. Mominul Islam, Shamim Reza, and Santa Mondal. They were deployed with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, a highly sensitive border region in Africa, when a fatal drone attack claimed their lives on December 13, 2025. The upcoming New York ceremony will honor a total of 68 peacekeepers who passed away recently, including 59 individuals who lost their lives over the past year while operating in high-risk zones.
Historical data from the United Nations shows that nearly 4,500 military, police, and civilian personnel have died in various peacekeeping operations worldwide since 1948. To mark this continuous legacy of service, Secretary-General Guterres will lay a traditional floral wreath at the UN Peacekeeping Memorial before commencing the formal medal presentation. Bangladesh currently maintains its status as the world`s fourth-largest troop-contributing country, showcasing a long-standing commitment to international security. More than 4,000 Bangladeshi personnel are actively deployed across global hotspots including Abyei, the Central African Republic, Cyprus, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Libya, South Sudan, and Western Sahara.
This extensive deployment includes 277 female peacekeepers who operate under complex operational mandates in deeply unstable regions. According to the latest data from the world body, over 50,000 peacekeepers hailing from 118 different nations are currently serving across 11 active global missions. The posthumous award serves as an institutional testament to the exceptional professionalism, valor, and international dedication consistently demonstrated by the Bangladeshi armed forces on the global stage.
