Palestine Marathon Draws Thousands Amid Israel’s War on Gaza

The tenth Palestine International Marathon was successfully held on Friday, May 8, 2026, in the occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem, with a symbolic parallel race organized in the Gaza Strip. This year’s event marked a significant return for the marathon in Gaza after a two-year hiatus caused by the devastating war on the enclave. The 42-kilometer race kicked off at 6:00 AM local time from the historic Church of the Nativity, drawing a massive crowd of both local Palestinians and international supporters who ran to demonstrate resilience and national unity.

According to marathon coordinator Itidal Abdul Ghani, the core message of this year’s race was the unity of the homeland. By holding simultaneous events on both sides of the Israeli separation regime, the organizers aimed to bridge the physical divide imposed by the occupation. In Gaza, a specific 5-kilometer race was held, starting from the Wadi Gaza Bridge and moving northward. This parallel event allowed those in the war-torn Strip to participate in a global movement of solidarity despite the immense challenges and ongoing humanitarian crisis they face daily.

The scale of participation in the 2026 marathon was historic. Overall, the number of runners exceeded 13,000, which included 2,523 participants in Gaza and approximately 1,000 foreign runners from 75 different countries. Additionally, a virtual marathon held in mid-April attracted more than 5,000 participants from 88 countries across the globe. The event featured several categories, ranging from the full marathon and a 21-kilometer half marathon to a family-friendly 5-kilometer run, ensuring that professional athletes and amateurs alike could join the cause.

This year’s race occurred against a backdrop of severe escalating violence and a staggering death toll. Despite reports of a ceasefire, Israeli military operations have continued in Gaza, where local authorities report at least 72,000 Palestinians killed and over 172,000 injured. In the occupied West Bank, the situation has also deteriorated since October 2023, with at least 1,155 Palestinians killed, nearly 11,750 wounded, and approximately 22,000 individuals arrested by Israeli forces. These grim statistics framed the marathon not just as a sporting competition, but as a poignant act of peaceful resistance.

Participants ran through the streets of Bethlehem, navigating routes shadowed by massive concrete separation walls and restrictive Israeli checkpoints. Many runners carried Palestinian flags or wore the iconic keffiyeh, transforming the race into a visual display of cultural identity and political defiance. Organized by the Palestinian Higher Council for Youth and Sports, the Palestinian Olympic Committee, and the Bethlehem Municipality, the marathon continues to serve as a platform for Palestinians to share their struggle with the international community through the universal language of sport.
