Yemen’s Houthi movement has seized control of the strategic Red Sea port city of Mocha, significantly expanding their dominance over the vital Bab al-Mandeb strait, according to reports by Al Jazeera and Reuters. The Iran-backed group took over the coastal city following the withdrawal of internationally recognized government forces.
Military sources reported that government troops attempted to reinforce their defensive positions and push back against the offensive. However, the overwhelming military pressure from the advancing Houthi fighters ultimately forced government units to abandon the port and surrounding districts, including the strategic Hais area. Official confirmation from the central Yemeni government is still pending.
The capture of Mocha grants the Houthis commanding influence over the southern entrance of the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandeb strait, which handles roughly ten to twelve percent of global maritime trade. Defense analysts note that because the strait is relatively narrow, the group can effectively monitor and influence shipping lanes using conventional artillery and shore-based positions.
The development represents a major tactical setback for the internationally recognized administration and poses potential security challenges for regional commercial shipping. Independent analysts warn that consolidated Houthi control along the Red Sea coastline could increase geopolitical tensions across the broader Middle East.
