Acts of Worship for the Sacred First Ten Days of Dhu al-Hijjah

Dhu al-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic Hijri calendar, carries immense spiritual significance and honor for Muslims around the world. Islamic jurisprudence places extraordinary emphasis on the initial portion of this sacred month, designating it as a premier season for intense devotion. In the Holy Quran, Allah Almighty underscores the profound weight of these particular nights by taking an oath by them. Surah Al-Fajr explicitly states, "By the dawn, and by the ten nights," which prominent companions like Abdullah ibn Abbas (RA) and scholars like Mujahid confirm directly refers to this specific period.

Prophetic traditions extensively validate the unmatched spiritual weight of the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah.

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) declared that there are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days. When his companions inquired if even participating in military expeditions for the sake of Allah was superior, the Prophet clarified that ordinary struggles do not match their value. The only exception belongs to a person who goes out sacrificing both his life and wealth for the divine cause and never returns. Each passing moment during this decade provides a rare avenue for achieving profound spiritual elevation.

The paramount act of worship associated with this particular season is the execution of the holy pilgrimage, Hajj.

This foundational pillar of faith becomes an absolute obligation once in a lifetime for every Muslim who possesses the necessary financial and physical means. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) assured believers that anyone who completes this pilgrimage sincerely, avoiding sinful speech and conduct, returns completely purified of sins like a newborn child. The ultimate recompense for an accepted pilgrimage is nothing short of eternal Paradise. Following Hajj, the ritual of animal sacrifice, or Qurbani, serves as another core institutional act of worship during these days.

The Prophet issued severe warnings to individuals who possess financial abundance yet deliberately neglect the obligation of sacrifice.

He instructed such wealthy abstainers to stay away from the community Eid prayer grounds entirely, highlighting the gravity of their omission. Believers are strongly encouraged to utilize these days to constantly recite the praises of Allah through phrases of declaration, magnification, and gratitude. Fasting during the first nine days of the month is highly virtuous, with the ninth day, known as the Day of Arafah, holding the greatest reward. Fasting on this single day expiates the sins of both the preceding year and the upcoming year.

An additional practice for those intending to offer a sacrifice involves refraining from cutting hair or nails.

This voluntary restriction begins at the sighting of the new moon and lasts until the individual’s sacrifice is completed, mirroring the sacred restrictions observed by pilgrims in Makkah. Furthermore, reciting the specific phrases of magnification known as Takbirat al-Tashreeq is an absolute obligation from the Fajr prayer of the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah until the Asr prayer of the 13th. This mandatory recitation must be performed at least once immediately after every congregational or individual obligatory prayer. This consistent remembrance aligns directly with the Quranic injunction to remember Allah during the designated days of festivity.

Muslims should proactively maximize their daily acts of devotion during this highly blessed season.

Failing to utilize this finite window represents a massive spiritual loss, as these days offer unparalleled divine mercy. Engaging in continuous repentance, voluntary prayers, charity, and constant remembrance ensures that a believer extracts the full potential of this sacred timeline. May Allah Almighty grant the entire Muslim community the capability to honor this period properly and accept all their righteous deeds.
