Legend Ataur Rahman Laid to Rest in His Mother’s Grave

The curtain has finally closed on the life of Ataur Rahman, one of the most towering figures in the history of Bangladeshi theatre. The eminent theatre personality and director was laid to rest in his mother’s grave at Banani Graveyard in Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon. The burial took place following a series of emotional tributes from the state and the cultural community, marking the end of an era for the country‍‍`s performing arts. Rahman passed away early Tuesday morning at the age of 84 while undergoing treatment at Popular Hospital in the capital.

The final journey of the legendary director began with his first funeral prayer (Janaza) at his residence in the Mogbazar area after the Zuhr prayer. The Janaza, conducted by his younger brother Abu Nomman Mahmudur, was attended by a galaxy of cultural luminaries including Mamunur Rashid, Nasiruddin Yousuff Bachchu, Zahid Hasan, and Gazi Rakayet. The atmosphere was somber as colleagues and disciples gathered to pay their last respects to a man who dedicated his entire life to the stage. His contributions had transformed the way theatre was practiced and perceived in Bangladesh.

Following the initial prayers, his body was taken to the Central Shaheed Minar, where thousands gathered for a final public tribute. Representing the government and various cultural organizations, people from all walks of life placed wreaths on his coffin. His contemporaries spoke about his unwavering commitment to secular and progressive culture. Ataur Rahman was not just a director; he was an institution. As the founder of the Nagorik Natya Sampradaya, he was instrumental in popularizing stage plays in the post-liberation era, bringing world-class literature to the local audience.

Throughout his illustrious career, Ataur Rahman directed some of the most iconic plays in the Bengali language. His notable works include Waiting for Godot, Galileo, Raktakarabi, and Irsha. Beyond his work with Nagorik, he was renowned for directing Payer Awaj Paoa Jay and Macbeth. His artistic vision was characterized by a deep understanding of human psychology and political subtext. Apart from directing, he was a prolific writer, penning several books on theatre theory and history, and served as a guest lecturer at various universities, passing his knowledge to the next generation of artists.

In recognition of his immense contribution to the nation‍‍`s culture, Ataur Rahman was honored with the Ekushey Padak and the Swadhinata Padak (Independence Award), the highest civilian honors in Bangladesh. He also held leadership positions in the Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation and the Sammilita Sangskritik Jota. While he has physically left the world, his legacy remains etched in the scripts he edited, the stages he designed, and the actors he trained. Ataur Rahman’s burial in his mother‍‍`s grave symbolizes a return to peace after a life filled with creative turmoil and immense success.
