Indonesia’s Anti-Graft Prosecutor Resigns After Major Raid

Indonesia’s Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes, Febrie Adriansyah, has officially resigned from his post following a series of high-profile police raids that resulted in the seizure of 74kg of gold bars and approximately $20 million in cash. The Attorney General’s Office confirmed the resignation on Saturday, stating that the move was necessary to maintain the integrity and neutrality of the ongoing law enforcement investigation.

The raids were conducted by the National Police’s corruption eradication units across at least 12 locations in Jakarta, South Tangerang, and Bogor on July 8 and 9. Investigators uncovered various currencies, including Indonesian rupiah, US dollars, Singapore dollars, and Saudi riyals, hidden in several premises. The largest portion of the seized assets was located at a private residence in Sentul, Bogor. While Adriansyah acknowledged the house belonged to him, he denied any illicit connection, asserting that the assets could be legally accounted for.

Police have not formally charged Adriansyah with any specific crime. However, the investigation is linked to broader probes into alleged corruption, bribery, and money laundering involving state-linked companies. Key areas of focus for investigators include the procurement of coal for state electricity plants and major fraud scandals previously associated with state insurers Asabri and Jiwasraya. The probe has caused significant tension within Indonesian government circles, as it touches upon several state-owned enterprises that have been under public scrutiny for years.

Until his resignation, Adriansyah was one of the most prominent figures in Indonesia’s legal system. Appointed to the special crimes division in 2022, he oversaw some of the country’s most complex corruption cases, making his sudden departure from office a major development. Attorney General ST Burhanuddin has accepted the resignation, emphasizing that the Attorney General’s Office remains committed to legal impartiality. Officials have stated that the special crimes unit will continue to function without disruption despite the leadership change.

The investigation, which has reportedly involved the questioning of 15 witnesses thus far, marks a critical moment for the current administration’s anti-corruption agenda. Public interest remains high, particularly given the magnitude of the seized assets and the seniority of the official involved. As the National Police continue their work, questions regarding the extent of the corruption network and potential future suspects remain at the forefront of the national discourse. The Attorney General’s Office has urged the public to respect the legal process and the presumption of innocence while the investigation proceeds.
