San Diego Mosque Shooting: Three Killed in Hate Crime

Two teenage gunmen opened fire outside the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday morning, fatally shooting three Muslim men before taking their own lives, according to local authorities. The assault took place just before the midday prayers at the sprawling facility, which stands as the largest mosque in San Diego County. Police officials immediately deployed active shooter protocols as emergency teams rushed to the perimeter.

Federal and local law enforcement agencies are currently treating the shooting as a suspected hate crime.

Among the deceased victims was a dedicated security guard who intercepted the heavily armed attackers at the entrance. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl stated during a press conference that the guard played a pivotal role in minimizing the threat and undoubtedly saved lives through his heroic actions. The other two victims were confirmed to be staff members working on the mosque campus. While children were attending classes at the Al Rashid School housed within the complex, school administrators and police successfully evacuated every student without any injuries.

The incident unfolded approximately two hours after the mother of one suspect contacted the police to report that her son had left their home with several of her personal firearms and her vehicle. The youth and an accomplice were reportedly dressed in full camouflage gear when they fled. Officers were actively searching nearby neighborhoods when the emergency 911 calls from the Islamic Center began flooding the dispatch lines. Minutes after fleeing the mosque, the suspects fired at a nearby landscaper from their vehicle, though the worker escaped unhurt as a bullet deflected off his safety helmet.

Responding officers discovered the suspects, aged 17 and 18, dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds inside their car a few blocks away. Investigators revealed that a suicide note recovered from the vehicle contained generalized hate speech and explicit references to racial pride. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has officially joined the homicide unit to dissect the digital footprints and motives of the shooters.

The tragic shooting comes just days before the global Muslim community prepares to celebrate Eid al-Adha, casting a heavy shroud of grief over the regional diaspora. California Governor Gavin Newsom released a formal statement condemning the act of terror, reasserting that violence against communities of faith will never be tolerated. President Donald Trump also addressed the situation from the White House, labeling the ambush as a terrible situation and promising rigorous federal oversight as the investigation continues.
