Qatar rejects Iran claim of holding captured war pilots

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has categorically rejected accusations by Iranian officials alleging that Doha is secretly holding three military pilots whose fighter jets crashed during the early days of the regional conflict, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters. Describing the allegations as completely baseless, false, and illogical, Qatari officials emphasized that the claims do not reflect the reality of the events that transpired in March.

During a news briefing in Doha, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari stated that the Iranian warplanes were intercepted after violating Qatari sovereignty and airspace. He explained that after standard rules of engagement were followed and attempts to establish radio communication with the pilots failed, necessary measures were executed to defend Qatari territory in strict accordance with international law.

The controversy arose after Mohammad Bagherzadeh, head of the Missing Persons Search Committee of Iran’s Armed Forces General Staff, submitted a formal letter to the International Committee of the Red Cross. The letter alleged that three pilots—identified as Javad Salehi, Abdolmajid Dashtian, and Omran Behraveshian—survived their aircraft crashes in March and were captured alive by Qatari forces, remaining cut off from communication for six months. Tehran urged international humanitarian intervention to secure their release.

Addressing these assertions, al-Ansari expressed surprise that such claims were being raised by Tehran, noting that Qatari search and rescue teams had thoroughly combed the area following the incidents. Doha successfully recovered the remains of one pilot and coordinated with an Iranian delegation last April to return the body in full compliance with international humanitarian standards. Furthermore, Qatari authorities had officially invited an Iranian technical delegation to visit Doha and review all documentation regarding the search and rescue operations, an invitation Tehran has yet to answer.

Al-Ansari reiterated that the Iranian push for involvement by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in this matter serves as a media ploy rather than a genuine humanitarian concern. While emphasizing Qatar‍‍`s unwavering commitment to defending its borders, people, and territorial sovereignty against any hostile action, he underscored that Doha continues to prioritize diplomatic engagement and dialogue to de-escalate ongoing regional tensions.
