Du Plessis, Klaasen, Rhodes Buy ETPL Team Rotterdam Dockers

The global cricket landscape is witnessing a significant shift as high-profile South African cricketers Faf du Plessis, Heinrich Klaasen, and the legendary Jonty Rhodes have entered the world of franchise ownership. The trio has officially purchased the Rotterdam Dockers, a franchise in the newly formed European T20 Premier League or ETPL. This move not only adds considerable weight to the league‍‍`s credibility but also sees Faf du Plessis taking on the dual responsibility of owner and captain for the Netherlands-based side. The ETPL, a collaborative venture between Ireland, Scotland, and the Netherlands, is quickly becoming a magnet for international sporting icons and business entrepreneurs.

What this really means is that the ETPL is bridging the gap between celebrity-backed ventures and pure sporting excellence. Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan is already a co-founder of the league, and his involvement has ensured massive visibility across the Asian subcontinent. The league’s structure is further bolstered by the presence of Australian legend Steve Waugh, who has joined as an owner for the Amsterdam franchise. Similarly, the Irish and Scottish teams have secured partnerships with modern-day stars like Glenn Maxwell and former New Zealand internationals Kyle Mills and Nathan McCullum. West Indian powerhouse Chris Gayle is not only a franchise owner in Glasgow but also serves as the face of the tournament as its global brand ambassador.

The inaugural season of the ETPL is scheduled to run from August 26 to September 20, 2026. Over the course of nearly four weeks, 33 high-octane matches will be played across six major European cities including Glasgow, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, Dublin, Belfast, and Rotterdam. The International Cricket Council has already sanctioned the league, marking a formal push into the European market which has traditionally been dominated by football and rugby. By introducing a proven franchise model with world-class infrastructure, the ETPL aims to tap into a dormant but potentially lucrative fan base in the Benelux and UK regions.

The player rosters are equally impressive, reflecting the league’s ambition to compete with established global tournaments. The Amsterdam franchise has already secured the services of Steve Smith and Mitchell Marsh, alongside Dutch national captain Scott Edwards. Speaking on his new role as a team owner, Faf du Plessis noted that being involved in a league from its inception offers a unique thrill and unparalleled potential. He expressed confidence that the combination of top-tier talent and strategic ownership would help the ETPL carve out a distinct identity in the crowded T20 calendar. Heinrich Klaasen’s explosive batting and Rhodes’ tactical acumen in the backroom are expected to make the Dockers a formidable unit.

However, the timing of the league does present some logistical challenges, particularly its overlap with the Caribbean Premier League. Cricket analysts are watching closely to see how the ETPL navigates player availability and broadcast viewership during this busy window. Despite these hurdles, the sheer volume of investment and the caliber of stars involved suggest a bright future for cricket in Europe. As Abhishek Bachchan and the South African trio prepare for the opening delivery this August, the world is waiting to see if the Rotterdam Dockers can lead the charge in making the ETPL a permanent fixture on the international cricket map.
