The political crisis surrounding former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has escalated following a series of raids conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). On Tuesday, investigative teams targeted the residence of the 71-year-old Trinamool Congress leader as part of an ongoing probe into allegations of signature forgery. The raids occurred while Mamata Banerjee was in Delhi, leaving her Kolkata residence vulnerable to the unexpected law enforcement operation.
The core of the investigation revolves around a disputed letter submitted to Assembly Speaker Rathindra Basu, which purportedly nominated Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as the opposition leader. Two Trinamool Congress members of parliament, Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, formally complained on May 27 that no such resolution was passed during the party meeting held on May 6. The MPs testified that while they signed the party’s proceedings book on May 19, they had not placed any signatures on May 6, contradicting the official claims made by the party leadership.
The two MPs alleged that the resolution dated May 6 was fabricated and forged after the fact. They pointed to specific irregularities, noting that among the 70 signatures present on the document, 14 were written in capital letters, which they described as highly suspicious. Shortly after these allegations were made public, the Trinamool Congress leadership acted swiftly to expel both MPs. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, who publicly named them during a press briefing just minutes before the party officially confirmed their expulsion for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities.
The CID has deployed three separate teams to carry out the investigation. One team is currently conducting a thorough search of Mamata Banerjee’s private residence. A second team has raided the office of her nephew and Member of Parliament, Abhishek Banerjee, while a third team is simultaneously searching his residence. The synchronized nature of these raids indicates an intensive investigative effort into the authenticity of the documents submitted to the Speaker’s office.
This development highlights the deepening internal fracture within the Trinamool Congress. The combination of open public infighting and high-level investigations by state agencies has placed Mamata Banerjee in a precarious political position. Observers are closely monitoring the CID’s findings, as the outcome of this forgery investigation could have significant implications for the party’s stability and the future of its leadership. As the probes continue, the political landscape in West Bengal remains in a state of high tension.
