England World Cup tickets resold for thousands of pounds

England supporters are facing extreme resale prices for tickets to the World Cup last-16 match against Mexico. Tickets originally purchased through the England Supporters‍‍` Travel Club are being relisted on FIFA’s official portal for thousands of pounds, drawing sharp criticism from supporter groups and football observers alike. The surge in prices has sparked a debate regarding the ethics of ticket reselling and the governance of world football.

The Football Association confirmed that the tickets were bought during a ballot following the tournament draw in December. The most expensive listing involves a set of four tickets with a face value of 460 pounds each, which are now priced at approximately 22,800 pounds apiece. When factoring in the 15 percent FIFA buyer fee, the total cost for a single ticket rises to over 26,000 pounds. This amount represents a markup of 57 times the original face value. Even after paying the 15 percent seller fee to FIFA, the original purchaser stands to make a profit of nearly 20,000 pounds per ticket.

Lower-priced tickets are similarly affected, with some listings showing a 12-fold increase in cost. A category four ticket originally worth 224 pounds is currently listed for over 2,600 pounds. Because FIFA’s platform permits the resale of these tickets, the Football Association lacks the authority to restrict the price gouging, a limitation that has frustrated fans who were unable to secure tickets through the initial allocation.

The Football Supporters‍‍` Association has condemned the practice, labeling FIFA’s online exchange as a system designed to facilitate greed. A spokesperson stated that FIFA profits from the transactions, as they collect fees from both the buyer and the seller. The association also criticized those individual supporters who choose to sell their tickets at such extreme prices, suggesting that this behavior undermines the spirit of football camaraderie.

The match, scheduled for Monday at the 80,000-capacity Azteca Stadium, is highly anticipated, with England’s initial allocation of 3,000 tickets being heavily oversubscribed. Over 4,000 members applied for the allocation, leading to a high demand. As of Friday, dozens of tickets within the England supporter sections remained listed on the resale site at inflated costs. The situation remains a point of contention as fans prepare for one of the most significant games in recent years, with many questioning whether current regulations adequately protect the interests of genuine supporters.
