Authorities in Fukushima, Japan, are conducting an intensive search for a bear that managed to escape an electronics factory after attacking four people. The animal, which city officials described as extremely intelligent, reportedly fled the facility on Wednesday night by unlatching and pushing open a window. The incident follows a series of encounters that have kept the region on high alert, according to reports from Reuters and Kyodo News.
The bear initially entered a steel factory on Tuesday evening, where it assaulted four workers before relocating to the nearby electronics plant. Law enforcement and wildlife officials immediately cordoned off the facility, hoping to capture the animal safely. Attempts to immobilize the bear using tranquilizer darts proved unsuccessful. Officials also deployed food traps baited with fruit and honey, but the bear bypassed the measures, consuming the bait without triggering the traps.
Mayor Yuki Baba remarked on the animal`s remarkable behavior, noting that it had previously been observed using its front paws to open a faucet to drink water. Officials suspect the bear released the window latch itself before fleeing the building under the cover of darkness. Police had authorized the use of lethal force if necessary, but refrained from opening fire due to the presence of flammable materials stored within the factory premises.
In response to the bear’s escape, Fukushima authorities have launched a drone-based search operation. Schools in the area have transitioned to online classes as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety. This event highlights a growing concern in Japan regarding the rising frequency of bear attacks. Last year, the country recorded seven deaths due to such incidents, marking a significant and concerning trend.
Historically, bear encounters tend to increase during the autumn months as animals forage for food before entering hibernation. While Mayor Baba expressed regret regarding the escape, he emphasized that the priority remains the safety of the local population. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel until the bear is located and removed from the area. Officials continue to monitor local surroundings as the search enters its second day.
