Freelance Photojournalist Killed While Covering Fighting in Marib Province

A freelance photojournalist lost his life while documenting clashes between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis in the province of Marib. The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate confirmed the death of Abdulrahman al-Houri on Saturday.

Al-Houri was filming along a frontline area in the southern sector of Marib on Friday. He regularly provided video footage and photographs to media organisations and reporters inside the province.

The journalists union released a statement mourning the young media worker and demanded a formal investigation into the incident to ensure those responsible face accountability.

The union also issued an appeal for the safety of media personnel operating in active conflict zones. Armed conflict places civilian reporters under severe risk.

The Yemeni army stated that two military commanders died during combat against the Houthi movement in Marib. The military statement did not disclose the exact timing of their deaths or provide details regarding the circumstances.

Control over Marib province is divided between the opposing sides. Government forces hold Marib city alongside the regional oil and gas fields, while the Houthi movement maintains control over multiple rural districts.

Yemen has suffered continuous conflict since 2014, when the Houthis captured the capital city of Sanaa and expanded their control into various parts of the country.

A military coalition led by Saudi Arabia intervened in 2015 to back the internationally recognised government of Yemen. This intervention unleashed years of warfare and generated a severe humanitarian crisis across the nation.

Fighting between government troops and the Houthis escalated again after a national ceasefire forged in 2022 collapsed in July.
