The International Criminal Court has officially issued an arrest warrant against Israel‍‍`s far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. The minister formally confirmed the receipt of the ICC notification during a press conference on Tuesday. The exact and specific charges leading to this drastic international legal measure remain largely undisclosed.

Smotrich furiously described the international arrest warrant against him as an outright declaration of war.

He publicly threatened to unleash fierce revenge in direct response to the court‍‍`s legal action. The hardline Israeli leader announced that he would soon sign an official order to evacuate Khan al-Ahmar. That specific directive would forcibly transfer Palestinian residents from the occupied West Bank village. The local community has spent years fighting bitter legal battles against Israeli authorities just to maintain their existence on that land.

Al Jazeera reported that the ICC likely acted over his roles in forced displacement and policies aimed at starving Palestinians in Gaza.

His active public support for transferring Israeli settlers into occupied territories heavily contributed to the latest warrant. The ICC previously issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then-Defense Minister Yoav Gallant back in November 2024. Those prior warrants for war crimes and crimes against humanity prompted the United States to impose severe retaliatory sanctions on multiple ICC judges and prosecutors.

The Trump administration‍‍`s heavy sanctions forced banks, credit card companies, and tech giants like Amazon to abruptly freeze accounts belonging to ICC officials. The global court was originally established in 2002 to prosecute genocide and war crimes. It currently holds 125 member states that have signed the Rome Statute. Major global powers including the United States, China, Russia, and Israel remain completely outside its jurisdiction. The ICC lacks any independent police force and relies entirely on the cooperation of its member states to execute these arrest warrants.
