A 39-year-old man has died after being attacked by a shark off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The incident occurred on Sunday just before noon, prompting an emergency response at a boat ramp on the Cassowary Coast. Police confirmed the victim was pulled from the water but succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The location is situated between Cairns and Townsville.
Emergency services arrived at the site after receiving reports of an attack on a swimmer at a nearby shoal. Queensland Police stated that they are preparing a report for the coroner regarding the death, which they have classified as sudden and non-suspicious. The identity of the victim has not been publicly released.
This marks the second fatal shark attack in Australian waters in just two weeks. Last Saturday, a 38-year-old man was killed while spearfishing near Perth, Western Australia, after sustaining fatal bite wounds to his legs. Authorities were unable to resuscitate the victim in that incident either.
Shark attacks occur more frequently in Australia than in many other parts of the world, though fatalities remain relatively rare. According to the Australian Shark-Incident Database, there were four reported shark encounters across the country in January, with only one resulting in death.
