Massive Train Bombing Kills 24 in Pakistan’s Quetta

At least 24 people have been killed in a massive train bombing in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province. Military personnel were among the victims of the attack, which occurred on Sunday, leaving more than 50 others injured according to senior officials. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident.Investigations are currently underway.

According to AFP, the explosion occurred when an explosive-laden car struck one of the carriages as the train passed a signal in Chaman Pattak. The force of the blast caused two carriages to derail and catch fire, blanketing the area in thick, black smoke. Witnesses reported significant damage to surrounding buildings and vehicles parked nearby, in an area where security forces are frequently stationed.

Local hospitals reported receiving more than 30 wounded individuals, several of whom remain in critical condition. The train was reportedly carrying army staff and their families traveling from Quetta to the northwestern city of Peshawar to celebrate the upcoming Eid holiday. Rescue teams were seen navigating the wreckage to recover victims.

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest yet poorest province, long plagued by a low-level insurgency. Separatist groups, including the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, have historically targeted security forces and government installations, accusing the central government of exploiting the region‍‍`s vast natural resources.

Security officials continue to secure the site and investigate the breach. The province remains under high alert following the blast.
