A powerful 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the west coast of Cuba on Monday, affecting parts of the Gulf of Mexico and sending tremors as far as the southern United States. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the seismic event was located approximately 64.9 miles west-northwest of the Cuban town of Mantua. While the quake was significant in magnitude, it occurred at a distance from major population centers, mitigating the potential for widespread structural damage.

Following the initial shock, the US National Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement to reassure the public, confirming that there was no threat of a tsunami resulting from the earthquake. This announcement provided immediate relief to coastal communities in Florida and Mexico that reported feeling the ground shake. Despite the reassurance, the seismic activity was strong enough to prompt a wave of reports on social media from residents who described swaying furniture, trembling floors, and moving trees.

Residents in Florida, particularly in Palm Beach and Hollywood, took to platforms like TikTok to share their experiences. Many reported feeling a distinct vibration while indoors, though local fire departments and emergency services quickly clarified that there was no cause for alarm or significant destruction. Similarly, reports emerged from Playa del Carmen in Mexico, where individuals described the shaking as lasting for nearly a minute. Some residents noted that the intensity was greater than previous earthquakes they had experienced in other regions.

The depth and location of the quake meant that while the intensity was palpable, the impact remained localized. Geological experts continue to monitor the area for potential aftershocks, which are common following seismic activity of this magnitude. As of now, there have been no official reports of casualties or severe infrastructure failure in Cuba, Florida, or Mexico. Emergency response teams remain on standby as a precaution, while regional authorities continue to assess the situation to ensure public safety remains uncompromised.
