A massive wildfire is raging through the Fontainebleau forest in France, forcing local residents to evacuate their homes and causing significant disruptions to both rail and motorway traffic. The incident comes as Western Europe continues to grapple with an intense heatwave. According to reports from AFP and Reuters, the blaze erupted near a motorway outside Fontainebleau, located about 60 kilometers southeast of Paris.

By Monday morning, the flames had scorched more than 800 hectares of land, propelled by strong, hot winds. The disruption caused authorities to partially close the A6 motorway, a critical artery connecting the north and south of France. In the nearby village of Vaudoue, 15 homes were evacuated to ensure public safety as the fire encroached on residential areas.

Approximately 400 firefighters have been mobilized to contain the flames across several towns in the region. Authorities deployed two waterbombing planes on Monday to assist in the operation, an action described by officials as exceptional due to the scale and virulence of the fire. Eric Brocardi, a spokesperson for the national federation of firemen, noted that this was the first time firefighting planes had been redirected from the arid south of France to the Paris region to tackle a blaze. Additionally, two firefighting helicopters and an observation aircraft were deployed to provide support.

The Paris region is currently under the grip of an intense heatwave, which has significantly elevated the risk of fire. Scientists from the World Weather Attribution group have stated that recent heatwaves in the region would have been virtually impossible without the influence of climate change. The persistent high temperatures have also forced officials to shut down three nuclear power stations in France.

Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported that forest fires have already consumed 17,000 hectares of land this year, marking a figure twice as high as the same period in 2025. Local authorities continue to urge caution as emergency services struggle to contain the blaze. The Fontainebleau forest is not only a natural reserve but also home to one of France’s most significant royal palaces, adding a layer of cultural urgency to the containment efforts.
