Millions in Sudan Need Emergency Shelter Amid Funding Shortages

An estimated 15.4 million people in Sudan urgently require emergency shelter and essential household supplies. Two United Nations agencies warned on Friday that severe funding shortages threaten to halt assistance to millions.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration issued a joint statement detailing the crisis. They stated that humanitarian organizations currently possess sufficient resources to prioritize assistance for only 10 percent of those in need, having reached just 936,000 people so far.

The agencies warned that emergency shelter stocks are running dangerously low. Without immediate funding, displaced families will face harsh weather, insecurity, and elevated risks of violence and exploitation.

Sudan is the largest displacement crisis globally. Approximately 8.6 million people are internally displaced within the country, while more than 4.6 million individuals have fled across borders to neighbouring nations.

More than 5.2 million people have returned to their areas of origin. Many of these returnees found their homes, local infrastructure, and essential services heavily damaged or completely destroyed.

Ongoing combat, insecurity, and drone attacks drive further displacement and restrict humanitarian operations on the ground.

The humanitarian response plan for Sudan requires $2.9 billion this year to assist 20.4 million people out of a total 33.7 million in need. Agencies have received only about 47 percent of this required funding.

The two organisations issued an appeal for urgent financial contributions. They stated these resources are vital to maintain emergency shelter supplies.

Armed conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has gripped the country since April 2023. The war has killed tens of thousands of people and forced millions from their homes.
