Saudi Arabia is undergoing a significant transformation in Hajj management, integrating advanced technology and artificial intelligence to create a safer, more efficient experience for pilgrims. The Kingdom’s vision is to streamline the entire "pilgrim experience," from initial travel planning to departure. During the 50th session of the Grand Hajj Symposium in Makkah, Deputy Minister of Hajj and Umrah Dr. Abdulfattah bin Sulaiman Mashat emphasized that the current goal is to ensure full readiness before pilgrims even arrive.
Technological innovation has become the cornerstone of modern Hajj services.
More than 60 government agencies are currently coordinating these efforts. Lieutenant General Mohammed bin Abdullah Al-Bassami, Director of Public Security, noted that over 600 integrated operational activities are being monitored during the Hajj season. Saudi Arabia has shifted its model from simple safety monitoring to scientific crowd management, utilizing data analysis and AI to mitigate potential risks before they materialize.
Makkah’s Mayor, Musaed Al-Dawood, reported that Makkah`s population swells from 2.5 million to 4.5 million during the season.
To handle this influx, the city manages 62 tunnels and sophisticated infrastructure to ensure food security and safety. According to the Royal Commission, Umrah participation surpassed 18.5 million last year, with pilgrim satisfaction rates reaching 91 percent. Furthermore, technology is being used to bridge communication gaps, with sermon translations provided in five international languages.
