Two-Gloved Aaron Rai Claims Historic US PGA Title

English golfer Aaron Rai secured his first career major title following a resilient performance at the grueling US PGA Championship held at Aronimink Golf Club. The 31-year-old Wolverhampton native fired a brilliant five-under 65 on Sunday to finish nine-under overall, securing a memorable three-shot victory over a star-studded field. Winning in Philadelphia—the iconic backyard of fictional boxing legend Rocky Balboa—Rai’s unconventional journey to the pinnacle of the golfing world has captured international attention.

The newly crowned champion possesses a highly unique visual trademark on the course.

While virtually all professional and amateur golfers wear a single glove to enhance their grip, Rai distinctively competes wearing two gloves. This unorthodox habit originated during his early childhood when his father accidentally forgot to pack the secondary glove, forcing him to play a round with just one. Finding the altered feel completely disruptive to his swing mechanics, Rai immediately returned to the two-glove setup and has stuck with it ever since. This quirky appearance reflects a deep, unyielding focus that has come to define his professional career.

Rai‍‍`s introduction to the sport occurred entirely by accident during his toddler years in England. After suffering a minor head bruise while playing with his older brother‍‍`s hockey sticks, his mother, Dalvir, set out to purchase safer plastic replacements but returned home with a set of plastic toy golf clubs instead. Although Rai initially harbored childhood dreams of becoming a Formula 1 driver while idolizing seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, his focus shifted permanently to competitive golf by the age of eight. His prodigious talent became immediately apparent at the 3 Hammers Golf Complex under instructor Darren Prosser, and he was later guided into the professional ranks by mentors Andrew Proudman and Piers Ward.

Reaching the summit of global golf required immense structural sacrifices from his family.

His father, Amrik, resigned from his job to fully dedicate his time to managing his son‍‍`s athletic development, while his mother worked extensive hours to secure the family‍‍`s financial stability. Coming from a British Asian background where traditional academic careers are heavily favored, Rai praised his parents for constantly encouraging him to pursue his athletic aspirations. Additionally, the major champion credited the precise technical and mental guidance provided by his wife, Gaurika Bishnoi—who is also an accomplished professional golfer—as a key factor behind his historic triumph at Aronimink. Rai turned professional in 2012, conquering developmental circuits before finally finding success on both the European and PGA Tours.

Tributes from across the global golfing community immediately flowed following Rai‍‍`s emotional victory. Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy and two-time major winner Xander Schauffele widely praised Rai‍‍`s relentless work ethic, noting that he is always the hardest worker in the gym and on the driving range when nobody is watching. Navigating the thick rough and devilish pins of Aronimink, Rai embodied Rocky‍‍`s famous adage about absorbing heavy hits while continuously moving forward to claim the historic Wanamaker Trophy.
