Jonathan Blow releases massive new indie puzzle game

American software designer Jonathan Blow has completed a ten-year development cycle on what he characterizes as the largest puzzle title ever assembled. Renowned as a key figure in the modern independent gaming movement following the release of Braid in 2008, the veteran developer is launching The Order of the Sinking Star across PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5 platforms. The project contains approximately 1,500 individual puzzles, demanding an estimated 500 hours of gameplay to reach completion.

Completing the title demands hundreds of committed hours.

The title functions by integrating core mechanics borrowed, with explicit permission, from four preexisting free puzzle games created by other designers. By combining systems from Alan Hazelden‍‍`s 2014 title Mirror Isles, which utilizes reflective surfaces for spatial transit, with Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, players encounter hundreds of layered interactions. Blow explained that placing experimental design principles above conventional commercial calculus allows his studio to produce singular creative work.

Artificial intelligence tools were entirely omitted from development.

Blow voiced strong skepticism regarding industry claims surrounding automated productivity, questioning why purported exponential efficiency gains have not yielded decades of equivalent output. He warned that young engineers risk losing the capability to program from first principles if they depend on synthetic generators rather than mastering technical foundations. Addressing past friction, including peer criticism regarding his socio-political stances, Blow maintained that creators should dedicate their energies to delivering robust software rather than engaging in ideological disputes.

To preserve architectural control, the studio bypassed popular pre-built solutions such as Unreal Engine or Unity, creating a bespoke programming language named Jai alongside a custom runtime engine.

Describing the simultaneous engineering challenges as operating on nightmare mode, the creator maintained that uncompromising technical experimentation remains the defining purpose of independent development.
