Authorities in the southwestern French city of Bordeaux have taken the emergency step of preventing more than 1,700 individuals from disembarking a British cruise ship. The decision was made following reports of a suspected gastroenteritis outbreak on board the vessel named Ambition. As of Wednesday morning, 1,233 passengers and 514 crew members remain confined to the ship while regional health officials conduct necessary medical assessments. The vessel, which primarily carries British and Irish nationals, arrived in the French port on Tuesday evening after departing from Belfast and Liverpool earlier this week.
The regional health authority in Gironde confirmed that 48 passengers and one crew member have displayed symptoms of gastrointestinal distress, commonly referred to as stomach flu. Officials have emphasized that this confinement is a precautionary measure intended to curb any potential spread of the illness to the local population. Notably, the authorities have clarified that there is currently no evidence linking this incident to a separate hantavirus cluster recently identified on the luxury ship MV Hondius. The focus remains on standard medical protocols to identify the exact cause of the illness among the affected passengers.
The cruise operator, Ambassador Cruise Line, responded to the situation by immediately implementing enhanced sanitation and prevention protocols on board the Ambition. According to the company, cases of illness began to rise shortly after passengers boarded in Liverpool on Saturday. In light of the ongoing health investigation, all scheduled shore excursions in Bordeaux have been cancelled. The company has offered full refunds to the passengers whose travel plans were disrupted by the confinement. A spokesperson for the line stated that guests would be permitted to leave the vessel once formal clearance is granted by French health inspectors.
Tragedy also struck during an earlier phase of the voyage. On Monday, a 92-year-old British passenger passed away due to cardiac arrest while the ship was docked in Brest, Brittany. Local officials stated that at this stage, the death does not appear to be associated with the gastrointestinal outbreak. This news has added a somber tone to the already tense situation on board. Ambassador Cruise Line was founded in 2021 and specifically caters to a demographic of travelers over the age of 50, often focusing on high-quality service and classic cruising experiences.
