West Bengal BJP Government to Take Oath on May 9

West Bengal’s newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government is set to take its oath of office on May 9. The ceremony will unfold at Kolkata‍‍`s historic Brigade Parade Ground, marking a dramatic shift in the state‍‍`s political landscape following the end of the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule.

State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya formally announced the schedule on Wednesday, emerging from a meeting with the Chief Secretary at the outgoing state secretariat, Nabanna. According to reports from The Hindu and The Times of India, the swearing-in is securely scheduled for 10 AM. The chosen date, May 9, holds deep cultural significance for the region. It coincides directly with ‍‍`Panchishe Baishakh‍‍`, the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Bhattacharya noted that aligning the ceremony with this date reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi‍‍`s vision of paying tribute to Bengal’s foremost cultural icons.

The choice of venue is entirely unprecedented. The sprawling Brigade Parade Ground has traditionally been reserved for massive political rallies, protests, and military displays. It has never before hosted a Chief Minister‍‍`s official oath-taking ceremony. By selecting this sprawling outdoor location over the conventional Raj Bhavan or an indoor stadium, the BJP intends to project the immense scale of its sweeping electoral mandate directly to the public. Prime Minister Modi has already confirmed his presence for the event. Furthermore, Chief Ministers from all BJP-governed states are expected to fly in to attend the grand ceremony.

As physical preparations gear up on the ground, the focal point of political discussion remains the selection of the state‍‍`s new Chief Minister. The Times of India reported that Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the clear frontrunner for the position. This speculation follows his high-stakes victory over outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Bhowanipore constituency. To finalize the leadership process, the BJP‍‍`s central high command has appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the central observer. Shah, widely viewed as the chief architect of the party‍‍`s massive haul of 207 seats in the 294-member assembly, will preside over the meeting of newly elected MLAs alongside co-observer and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

The party is also heavily weighing the appointment of two Deputy Chief Ministers to carefully balance regional aspirations. Sources indicate a likely formula where one deputy would be chosen from North Bengal and the other from South Bengal.

Beyond the swearing-in event, a significant administrative and symbolic overhaul is on the horizon. Discussions are actively underway to shift the seat of the state government back to the Writers‍‍` Building, historically known as Mahakaran, located in central Kolkata. For over a decade, the Trinamool Congress government operated out of ‍‍`Nabanna‍‍` in Howrah after moving out of the Writers‍‍` Building citing renovation needs. A permanent return to Mahakaran is currently being viewed as a symbolic dismantling of the previous administration‍‍`s legacy and a total restoration of Bengal‍‍`s traditional corridors of power. The upcoming Saturday will formally inaugurate a completely new political era in West Bengal.
