Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has claimed that its naval forces successfully captured an unmanned United States submarine near the Strait of Hormuz. According to reports by Al Jazeera and Reuters, the seizure comes amid escalating maritime confrontations between Tehran and Washington in the critical waterway linking the Gulf and the Arabian Sea. Iranian state media identified the recovered vessel as a Dive-LD, an autonomous underwater vehicle manufactured by the California-based defence firm Anduril Industries, designed primarily for surveillance and seabed mapping.
The IRGC stated that the submersible was intercepted during a complex intelligence and operational mission at the entrance to the strait. However, Washington dismissed the strategic significance of the loss, with an unnamed Pentagon spokesperson confirming to Reuters that the vessel had malfunctioned a day prior to its recovery. The military official maintained that the older model drone was conducting routine regional surveys and carried no sensitive data or classified sonar equipment.
Measuring approximately six meters in length, the Dive-LD platform is built to operate in hostile and deep-sea environments where vehicle loss is an anticipated operational possibility. Anduril Industries acknowledged the loss of the vessel while emphasizing its attritable design meant for high-risk missions. The incident unfolds against a backdrop of intensifying tit-for-tat military strikes between US and Iranian forces in the region, which have severely disrupted commercial shipping lanes and heightened international anxiety over regional security and energy stability.
