Met Office warns developing El Niño could make 2027 hottest year

The El Niño event developing over the Pacific Ocean is likely to be the strongest in living memory, the UK Met Office warned on Friday, according to BBC News and Anadolu Agency. The powerful natural climate phenomenon pushes up global temperatures and significantly increases the risks of extreme weather events worldwide. Added to the compounding effects of human-induced climate change, the Met Office is warning that it is very likely to mean 2027 becomes the hottest year on record globally.

There is growing evidence that weather patterns across the globe are already being affected by these shifts. Below-average monsoon rains in India and suppressed hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean have emerged as early indicators. Furthermore, El Niño could put the United Kingdom at a greater risk of experiencing a wet and stormy autumn, with signs of a very unsettled spell already appearing in long-range forecasts.

Prof Adam Scaife, head of long-range forecasting at the UK Met Office, emphasized the gravity of the situation. We should be clear that this is an unprecedented event, he noted, adding that he has never seen an El Niño signal this intense in their forecasting models. While there is no definitive evidence that climate change makes El Niño events more frequent, its weather impacts become drastically more extreme in a steadily warming world.

El Niño is a naturally occurring weather pattern that recurs roughly every two to seven years and typically lasts for about a year. Trade winds that usually blow from east to west across the Pacific Ocean weaken or even reverse, allowing massive bodies of warm water to spread eastwards. This process releases substantial heat from the ocean directly into the atmosphere, lifting global temperatures and shifting regional rainfall patterns.

Scientists typically declare an El Niño event when sea surface temperatures in a key region of the Pacific Ocean rise zero point five degrees Celsius or more above the long-term average. Current direct measurements show that these temperatures are already well over two degrees Celsius above normal levels. Latest forecasts from the Met Office suggest that these temperature anomalies could exceed three degrees Celsius later this year as El Niño approaches its seasonal peak.

This unprecedented escalation would surpass records going back to nineteen fifty, making it likely the strongest event since the nineteenth century. Very high temperatures in the deeper ocean—reaching around eight degrees Celsius above normal at a depth of one hundred meters in certain locations—could help supercharge the event. This serves as a massive reservoir of warm water fuel to reinforce the ongoing phenomenon.

Dr Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, highlighted the growing certainty among researchers. We have many months to go while this event continues to develop, and that is one of the reasons we have increased confidence that this will be a record-setting event, he stated. Some climate groups have even projected anomalies reaching four degrees Celsius above average, suggesting potential impacts rivalling centuries of historical climate variations.
