Rescue teams in Indonesia have been combing through debris for survivors following a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake that struck off the coast of Flores Island, according to Reuters and BBC News. The disaster has left at least 47 people dead and thousands displaced across the region. The shallow quake struck early Saturday morning, triggering hundreds of aftershocks and causing severe structural damage to hundreds of homes, schools, and healthcare facilities throughout East Nusa Tenggara province.
Officials from Indonesia`s National Disaster Management Agency reported that the hardest-hit areas include the Manggarai and Sikka regencies, where mountainous terrain and blocked roads have complicated assessment and relief efforts. East Nusa Tenggara Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena stated that several victims were killed in their sleep when roofs and walls collapsed upon them. Hospitals in Ruteng sustained severe damage, with operating theater and clinic ceilings caving in, forcing medical staff to treat injured patients in temporary tents outside damaged facilities.
The sudden tremor also impacted local infrastructure near the coast, where video footage from the port town of Maumere showed large chunks of concrete breaking off terminal structures as passengers waited to board inter-island ferries. Authorities initially issued a tsunami warning after the seismic event, prompting roughly two thousand residents living near coastal areas to flee toward higher ground. However, the tsunami alert was lifted approximately three hours later when monitoring stations detected no significant or dangerous changes in sea level.
In response to the emergency, the national government has dispatched tonnes of food supplies, logistics packages, and medical teams to the affected districts. Search and rescue personnel continue to work around the clock to reach remote villages cut off by landslides triggered by the mainshock and its numerous aftershocks. Seismologists note that Indonesia sits along the seismically active Pacific Ring of Fire, a region prone to frequent tectonic activity and major earthquakes. BNPB has urged residents to remain calm, avoid damaged structures, and stay updated through official advisories.
