A forty-seven-year-old Muslim peddler was brutally beaten and hacked to death with an axe in the Purulia district of West Bengal last Tuesday, local police and grieving family members confirmed. An investigative desk report by Ummah Kantho revealed that the horrific incident occurred in Saga Supuri village under the jurisdiction of the Bandwan Police Station. The victim, identified as Akbar Mondal, was a resident of Punisol village in the neighboring Bankura district who temporarily stayed in Purulia to earn a living. The sheer brutality of the attack has triggered widespread panic, profound outrage, and severe anxiety among the minority Muslim community across the entire region.
According to local accounts and testimonies from the family, Akbar Mondal used to travel between various rural villages selling stainless steel utensils from a manual van. On the morning of the incident, while he was conducting his routine trade in Supuri village, he was suddenly intercepted and forcibly dragged into a house belonging to a resident named Vishwanath Mahato. Inside the premises, assailants repeatedly struck him with wooden sticks and subsequently inflicted fatal injuries using a sharp axe and a dagger. Law enforcement officials later recovered the blood-stained body of the deceased from the residence and immediately arrested Mahato in connection with the homicide.
The victim`s twenty-year-old son, Zulfikar Mondal, who also works as a street vendor in the same area due to economic hardships, directly blamed a growing climate of communal hatred for his father`s death. He stated that local authorities contacted him on Tuesday afternoon requesting his presence at the Bandwan hospital where he witnessed the mutilated and severely disfigured body of his father. Zulfikar alleged that because of their visible Islamic identity and beards, certain extremist groups frequently subjected them to intimidation and forced them to chant religious slogans. He added that vendors from the minority community were repeatedly threatened and told that they would no longer be permitted to operate within those specific neighborhoods.
Senior residents of Punisol village expressed deep sorrow over the escalating hostility, noting that local Muslim laborers had safely traded in the Purulia district for over 14 years without facing any prior altercations. They argued that recent political shifts and the rise of right-wing nationalist elements have exacerbated communal fractures, leaving impoverished laborers constantly fearing for their lives while working. The victim`s wife, Nazima Bibi, along with his daughter, Jummatun Khatun, have demanded a comprehensive investigation and exemplary punishment for all culprits involved in the slaying. This tragedy follows an incident a few months ago in Bankura where another Muslim hawker was stabbed for refusing to chant majoritarian slogans.
