Rules for Adhan and Iqamah in Mina During Hajj

During the days of Hajj, pilgrims often encounter confusion regarding the rules of Adhan and Iqamah while staying in Mina. It is essential to clarify these regulations based on the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and established Islamic jurisprudence. Each of the five daily prayers in Mina must be performed independently at its designated time, as gathering prayers like in Arafat or Muzdalifah is not the practice here.Congregational prayer is a standard practice in Mina.

Hadith narrations from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) confirm that the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the five daily prayers—Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr—separately during his stay in Mina (Sahih Muslim: 1218). While joining prayers is permitted at Arafat and Muzdalifah, this rule does not apply to Mina. Therefore, performing a separate Adhan and Iqamah for each obligatory prayer is the consensus of the majority of scholars.

Usually, a central Adhan is broadcast from Masjid al-Khayf, which is sufficient for most pilgrims. However, performing an individual Adhan for specific groups is considered Mustahabb (recommended). Even if a central Adhan suffices, providing a separate Iqamah for each congregational prayer is a Sunnah or an essential practice for any group.

Crucially, even if the prayer itself is performed as Qasr (shortened), the formula for Adhan and Iqamah remains unchanged. They must be recited in their full, standard forms, regardless of the prayer length. Adhering to these guidelines ensures spiritual discipline throughout the Hajj journey.
