A laser hair removal device and a container of hot chocolate triggered a major bomb scare at Melbourne airport on Thursday morning. The discovery during routine security screening forced authorities to immediately lock down parts of the facility. The sudden disruption caused chaos for hundreds of domestic travelers waiting in the terminal.
Police shut down the area for nearly four hours as specialized units responded to the threat.
The incident unfolded just before 06:00 local time at Avalon Airport, located about 50 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. Security personnel flagged a suspicious package on the scanner, prompting an urgent call to the bomb squad. Technicians later examined the baggage and found only the beauty device alongside a box of hot chocolate powder inside.
These harmless everyday items caused widespread alarm across Victoria`s second-busiest air hub.
Police temporarily detained the owner of the bag for questioning regarding the suspicious contents. Victoria Police Acting Inspector Nick Uebergang noted that the man was initially uncooperative with investigating officers. This lack of initial cooperation made the situation difficult and significantly prolonged the lockdown.
The Melbourne resident was ultimately released without facing any formal criminal charges.
International departures and arrivals remained completely unaffected throughout the morning ordeal. However, authorities were forced to cancel two domestic flights operating to and from Sydney. Several other domestic routes operated by Qantas subsidiary Jetstar experienced severe delays on the tarmac.
Passengers told local media outlets they were directed to wait in an outdoor car park without any clear communication. Frustrated travelers reported lacking access to basic amenities like restrooms or drinking water during the prolonged outdoor wait.
An airport spokesperson stated that the immediate response clearly demonstrated the vigilance of their security protocols. The facility fully reopened four hours later once officials guaranteed the safety of all passengers and staff.
