A high-stakes joint military operation conducted by American and Nigerian armed forces has successfully eliminated the global second-in-command of the Islamic State in the Lake Chad Basin. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu confirmed the strategic breakthrough in an official state broadcast, validating the operational details of the counter-terrorism raid. The targeted mission that left this prominent IS leader killed Trump initially announced on his social media network, Truth Social, praising the tactical execution.
Several high-ranking lieutenants were also killed alongside al-Minuki during the precision strike.
President Tinubu characterized the assault on the militant compound as a daring and heavy blow to the operational command of the global terrorist hierarchy. Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, also known as Abu Bakr ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Mainuki, was designated a Specially Designated Global Terrorist by Washington in 2023. The Nigerian military disclosed that the operation was facilitated through enhanced intelligence-sharing channels and a recently expanded bilateral defense partnership with the United States. Geopolitical analysts view the development as the most devastating setback for the Islamic State since the elimination of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019.
Believed to be originally from Borno State, al-Minuki had recently been elevated to the position of Head of General Directorate of States within the international IS apparatus. In this elite role, he oversaw cross-border logistical and tactical actions across the volatile Sahel and West Africa, directly coordinating attacks on civilians and religious minorities. Military spokesperson Samali Uba confirmed that al-Minuki previously operated as a senior commander for Boko Haram before pledging allegiance to the Islamic State in 2015. Intelligence logs also tie him directly to the infamous 2018 Dapchi boarding school abductions, which resulted in the kidnapping of over 100 schoolgirls.
The Lake Chad Basin comprises a vast network of waterways shared between Nigeria, Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, historically serving as a stronghold for extremist factions. President Trump expressed gratitude toward the Nigerian administration for their counter-terrorism coordination, asserting that al-Minuki would no longer threaten regional populations or orchestrate plots against American citizens. White House security officials believe the disruption will severely handicap the structural financial channels running through North and West Africa, where al-Minuki previously facilitated fighter movements to Libya.
Operational collaboration between Abuja and Washington has scaled up significantly as the West African nation battles rising domestic insurgencies. In April, Islamic State operatives claimed responsibility for a brutal mass shooting at a football pitch in northeastern Adamawa state that left 29 people dead. This followed a previous joint aerial offensive conducted last Christmas against militant encampments in northwestern Sokoto state. Speaking at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali, Rwanda, President Tinubu defended Nigeria`s expanding reliance on international security alliances to stabilize the region.
