Jorge Martin Claims First Aprilia Victory in France

Jorge Martin delivered a masterclass in determination and tactical racing on Sunday, securing his first MotoGP victory for Aprilia at the French Grand Prix. Starting from seventh on the grid, the Spaniard navigated a chaotic field at Le Mans to claim a win that has been 588 days in the making. This victory marks a significant turning point for the former world champion, who has struggled through a 2025 season defined by physical injuries and frequent crashes. With this triumph, Martin has moved to within just a single point of his teammate and current championship leader, Marco Bezzecchi.

The race dynamics shifted late in the afternoon as the sun began to break through the overcast skies of northern France. Martin methodically worked his way through the pack, eventually hunting down Bezzecchi, who had led for much of the race. With only three laps remaining, Martin executed a decisive overtake to seize the lead and never looked back. An emotional Martin told reporters after the race that he felt immense gratitude toward his family and his team, who supported him during the long winless drought following his 2024 title.

The day was equally historic for Aprilia as a manufacturer. In addition to Martin and Bezzecchi taking the top two spots, Ai Ogura finished third for Trackhouse, Aprilia’s satellite team. This resulted in the first-ever podium sweep for the Italian manufacturer in the premier class. Ogura’s achievement was particularly noteworthy as he became the first Japanese rider to stand on a MotoGP podium in 14 years. The young rider expressed his delight with the bike’s pace, noting that while the race was difficult, the setup allowed him to hold off late charges from rival manufacturers.

In contrast, it was a day to forget for the Ducati factory team. Reigning world champion Marc Marquez was forced to miss the race entirely after fracturing his foot during Saturday’s sprint. His teammate, Francesco Bagnaia, who started from pole position, suffered his third Sunday retirement of the season after crashing out while under pressure in second place. These high-profile failures opened the door for Aprilia’s dominance, as the team’s riders demonstrated both reliability and superior speed throughout the 27-lap contest.

Aprilia boss Massimo Rivola, who watched the internal battle between his two factory riders with bated breath, praised the maturity of both Martin and Bezzecchi. Rivola recalled a moment last year when Martin considered leaving the team, only to be convinced that the Aprilia machine was capable of winning at the highest level. After crossing the finish line, Martin celebrated by mimicking the signature goal celebration of French soccer star Kylian Mbappe. As the championship standings tighten, with Bezzecchi at 84 points and Martin at 83, the rivalry within the Aprilia garage is expected to intensify as the season progresses.
