Tim Cook to Step Down as Apple CEO: John Ternus Named Successor

In a move that marks the end of a historic era for Silicon Valley, Apple CEO Tim Cook has announced he is stepping down from his role. Cook, who inherited the position from the legendary Steve Jobs in 2011, will officially hand over the reins on September 1, 2026. The company confirmed on Monday that John Ternus, Apple’s current head of hardware engineering, will become the next chief executive.

Cook‍‍`s 15-year tenure has been characterized by unparalleled financial prosperity. According to reports from the Associated Press and Al Jazeera, under his leadership, Apple’s market capitalization surged from roughly $350 billion to a staggering $4 trillion—a growth of more than 1,000 percent. While critics often noted that Cook lacked the raw visionary spark of Steve Jobs, he proved to be an operational genius, leveraging the iPhone’s dominance to transform Apple into the world’s most valuable public company. During his reign, yearly revenue nearly quadrupled, climbing from $108 billion in 2011 to over $416 billion in fiscal year 2025.

At 65, Cook is not leaving the company entirely. He will transition into the role of Executive Chairman, similar to the paths taken by other tech titans like Jeff Bezos of Amazon and Reed Hastings of Netflix. In his new capacity, Cook will remain involved in Cupertino’s high-level strategy and focus on engaging with global policymakers. "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple," Cook expressed in a letter posted to the company’s website, thanking the employees and shareholders for their trust.

The incoming CEO, 50-year-old John Ternus, is a seasoned Apple veteran who joined the firm in 2001. Since becoming the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering in 2021, Ternus has been instrumental in the development of the iPad, AirPods, and multiple generations of the iPhone and Mac. Cook spoke highly of his successor, stating, "John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity. He is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future."

Beyond maintaining the iPhone‍‍`s success, Cook oversaw the birth of entirely new product categories, including the Apple Watch, AirPods, and the Apple Vision Pro. He also successfully shifted Apple’s focus toward recurring services such as iCloud, Apple Music, and Apple Pay, which have become massive revenue streams. As Apple prepares for this significant leadership transition, the industry will be watching closely to see how Ternus navigates the challenges of artificial intelligence and global market shifts in the coming years. September 1 will indeed mark the start of a new chapter for the company that changed the world of personal technology.
