Russia Pounds Kyiv with 1,400 Drones as Eastern Push Stalls

Russia has unleashed a massive wave of aerial attacks on the Ukrainian capital, deploying more than 1,400 drones and 56 missiles over Wednesday and Thursday. According to international news reports, the majority of this onslaught was directed at Kyiv, following weeks of mounting tension. While Ukraine‍‍`s air defense systems successfully intercepted a significant number of these projectiles, several drones and missiles managed to strike residential areas and infrastructure, causing widespread damage and injuries.

The scale of this aerial bombardment is unprecedented in the current phase of the war.

The escalation comes in the wake of Russia‍‍`s Victory Day celebrations on May 9, a major holiday commemorating the end of the Second World War. Before the event, the Kremlin had issued stern warnings, threatening massive strikes on central Kyiv if any attacks were directed at the Red Square parade in Moscow. Although President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had proposed a ceasefire starting as early as May 5, Moscow delayed its response until May 7, ultimately presenting its own terms as a unilateral peace initiative accompanied by further threats.

Despite the intensity of the air raids, the situation on the ground tells a different story. Russia’s territorial advance in eastern Ukraine has slowed to a crawl, largely due to a successful interdiction campaign by Ukrainian forces. By targeting supply lines and logistics hubs, Ukraine has effectively prevented essential fuel and ammunition from reaching the Russian frontline. This tactical success has forced the Russian military to rely more heavily on long-range drone and missile strikes to project power and demoralize the civilian population.

The timeline of the attacks reveals a calculated pattern of escalation. Following the Victory Day period, where 43 drones and multiple ballistic missiles were launched, there was a brief moment of calm on May 11. However, this was followed by a massive overnight strike on May 12 involving 892 drones. The intensity reached its peak on the night of May 13-14, with 675 drones and dozens of missiles hitting the capital, as confirmed by Al Jazeera. What remains clear is that while Russia maintains its aerial pressure, its ability to seize new ground in the east remains significantly hampered.
