Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune announced on Saturday that the country`s designated envoy, Kamel Retieb, will return to the Malian capital of Bamako to resume his full diplomatic duties. This critical decision comes a day after the national defense ministry in Algiers declared the comprehensive reopening of its airspace to both civilian and military aircraft traveling to and from its southern neighbor.
Mali`s military-led government quickly responded with reciprocal actions. Government spokesperson Issa Ousmane Coulibaly confirmed in a formal public statement that Bamako is actively welcoming back the Algerian ambassador and lifting all previous flight restrictions for Algerian aircraft. The mutual agreement officially ends a bitter standoff that had severely disrupted regional travel and commercial aviation over the past year.
The diplomatic rift between the two African nations originally erupted in April of last year following a severe border security incident. Authorities in Algiers claimed they had successfully shot down a Malian surveillance drone that had illegally violated their sovereign national airspace. What remains unclear is the exact flight trajectory of the aircraft, as defense officials in Bamako vehemently disputed the Algerian allegation, insisting the drone was intercepted while operating completely within Malian territorial borders.
Following the initial drone confrontation, both governments swiftly recalled their top diplomats for urgent consultations and unilaterally suspended cross-border aviation operations. The prolonged bilateral dispute significantly exacerbated existing geopolitical tensions in the highly volatile region. Relations had already been straining after Mali officially withdrew from a critical regional peace agreement with armed groups that Algeria had previously brokered and mediated.
