India and UAE Sign Major Defense Pact Amid Iran War

India and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed a comprehensive defense, energy, and shipping cooperation pact amid escalating military tensions involving Iran in the Middle East. The agreements were finalized during a high-profile meeting between visiting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan in Abu Dhabi on Friday. Prime Minister Modi commenced his six-day international tour with this strategic stop in the Gulf nation, highlighting the shifting geopolitical alignments in the region.

The bilateral summit focused heavily on securing maritime supply routes and defense infrastructure.

The newly established defense cooperation pact prioritizes critical areas such as maritime security, cyber defense, secure communication networks, intelligence sharing, and joint military training exercises. Additionally, both nations agreed to enhance technological collaboration within their respective defense manufacturing industries. On the energy front, the leaders reached a landmark agreement allowing a portion of the crude oil stored in the UAE’s eastern region of Fujairah to be integrated into India’s strategic petroleum reserves. Talks also advanced regarding long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply chains.

This strategic alliance comes at a time when regional stability faces unprecedented threats due to the ongoing Iran conflict. Recently, the UAE‍‍`s eastern port city of Fujairah fell victim to coordinated drone and missile strikes, which directly impacted a local oil refinery. According to official reports, several Indian laborers working at the facility sustained injuries during the attacks, raising serious security concerns in New Delhi. The signed pact explicitly addresses these vulnerabilities by establishing a more resilient framework for mutual defense and infrastructural security.

The UAE currently stands as India’s third-largest global trading partner and is home to over 4.5 million Indian expatriates. Consequently, the welfare and security of the Indian diaspora formed a core component of the leaders‍‍` discussions. Both heads of state reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining long-term peace, economic resilience, and maritime freedom across the crucial energy corridors of the Arabian Sea.
