European football’s governing body UEFA announced on Tuesday that the Allianz Arena in Munich and the Camp Nou in Barcelona will host the men`s Champions League finals in 2028 and 2029, respectively. The decision returns the continent`s most prestigious club match to two of its most famous sporting venues. UEFA also confirmed the destinations for the Women`s Champions League finals over the same cycle, selecting host cities in France and Wales.
Club football`s showpiece fixtures are returning to established European powerhouses.
The 2028 fixture will mark the third time the Allianz Arena has staged the European Cup decider, following Chelsea’s penalty shootout victory against Bayern Munich in 2012 and Paris Saint-Germain’s maiden continental title in 2025. Jan-Christian Dreesen, chief executive of Bayern Munich, welcomed the announcement, noting that the 70,000-capacity arena remains prepared to handle global sporting events with proven organizational efficiency. The Bavarian venue requires minimal alterations to meet international broadcasting and security standards.
Barcelona will assume hosting duties the following year, scheduling the 2029 European final just 12 months before Spain co-hosts the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco. The Spanish club has been conducting extensive redevelopment work on the stadium since launching an infrastructure overhaul in 2023. Barcelona president Joan Laporta emphasized that European football`s governing body demonstrated clear confidence in the ongoing engineering project, declaring that the updated complex will stand as an international architectural benchmark.
The fixture marks the stadium`s first final since the turn of the century.
The Camp Nou last hosted the European club final in 1999, when Manchester United scored two stoppage-time goals to secure a memorable 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich. Before the tournament moves to Germany and Spain, the 2026-27 final is already scheduled to take place at Atletico Madrid’s Estadio Metropolitano on June 5, 2027. UEFA paired the men`s selections with announcements for the women`s tournament, awarding the 2028 Women`s Champions League final to Parc Olympique Lyonnais in France.
The 2029 women`s edition will move to Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, a 73,000-seat venue that previously hosted the men’s 2017 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus. Noel Mooney, chief executive of the Football Association of Wales, welcomed the selection, stating that staging the final will accelerate structural investment and participation across girls` and women`s football programs nationwide.
