Heatwave in India: 16 Die from Heatstroke in Telangana

A severe heatwave is gripping India’s southern state of Telangana, leading to the deaths of at least 16 people across seven districts due to heatstroke. While the government has confirmed this toll, unofficial reports suggest the figure could be significantly higher.Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy confirmed the casualties during a review meeting held on Sunday.

The state government stated that four deaths occurred in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district, three each in Warangal Urban, Karimnagar, and Nizamabad, with one death each in Jogulamba Gadwal, Rangareddy, and Suryapet. Health officials noted that elderly individuals and those with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable. The state has announced an ex-gratia compensation of 400,000 rupees for the victims‍‍` families.

According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, temperatures in 19 districts have surpassed 45 degrees Celsius. In areas such as Bhadradri Kothagudem and Jagtial, mercury levels reached 46.3 degrees Celsius. Residents have been urged to avoid outdoor activity between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
