Mother and Newborn Rescued From Venezuela Earthquake Rubble

A mother and her 18-day-old newborn baby were miraculously rescued alive after spending 32 hours trapped under the rubble of a collapsed eight-story building in La Guaira following devastating twin earthquakes in Venezuela, BBC News reported on Sunday. Dayana Patino told reporters from her hospital bed in Caracas that her tiny son, Juan David, gave her the ultimate motivation to remain awake and alert throughout the terrifying ordeal. The rescue operation has quickly become a powerful symbol of hope across the South American nation, which faces unprecedented devastation from the disaster.

The country was struck on Wednesday by back-to-back earthquakes measuring magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, according to official data confirmed by Reuters and BBC News. The catastrophic natural disaster has claimed the lives of at least 1,450 people, with tens of thousands of others still reported missing beneath the debris. The interim president of Venezuela described the incident as the most brutal natural catastrophe in the entire history of the nation, prompting full-scale international mobilization. The coastal region of La Guaira, located just north of the capital city, suffered the brunt of the seismic waves, leaving entire residential blocks completely flattened.

Recalling the horrific moments of the collapse, Patino explained that she was doing the washing up in her eighth-floor apartment when the first tremors began. She immediately rushed to cradle her newborn infant, initially assuming that it would be nothing more than a light, temporary tremor. Within seconds, the entire structure gave way, causing her to feel as though she were flying before being submerged in water, dust, and concrete. She was thrown into a narrow pit, crushed against heavy household furniture as the upper floors crashed down around them.

Initially, the young mother attempted to scream for assistance but quickly realized that the dense layers of debris completely muffled her voice to the outside world. She decided to conserve her energy, resolving to scream only when she could hear distinct footsteps or voices of rescue workers nearby. Her left leg was tightly pinned under a massive slab of concrete, preventing any movement, while her temple was pressed painfully against a sharp rock. In the absolute pitch-black darkness of the ruins, she accidentally felt a Bible beneath her hand, which she credited with initiating her psychological journey of survival.

Holding her baby close to her chest, Patino constantly touched his nose to verify that he was still breathing and alive in the suffocating darkness. She kept reminding herself that as long as her son survived, she would find the strength to stay alive alongside him. Her salvation arrived when she heard the distant voice of her brother calling out her name from above the mound of masonry. Summoning all the strength left in her lungs, she screamed back, prompting her brother to promise that he would not leave the site until he pulled her out safely.

Her husband, Gerson, had just returned home and parked their vehicle when the earthquakes struck, managing to jump over a perimeter fence to secure his safety. Upon seeing the total collapse of their apartment building, he feared the worst and assumed his entire family had perished. He described the exact moment of their extraction as an absolute miracle, stating that seeing his son alive made him feel as though he had been born again. What remains unclear is how many more survivors might still be trapped alive in the lower levels, as the critical 72-hour survival window continues to close rapidly.

Medical professionals at the Caracas clinic confirmed that the newborn baby miraculously sustained only minor scratches and is in stable condition. Patino suffered significant injuries to both of her legs and will require extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation before she can walk again. The family lost their home, all personal possessions, and their pet dog remains missing in the aftermath of the collapse. Despite the profound loss, Gerson and Dayana expressed deep gratitude for their lives, promising to start from scratch and rebuild everything they lost.
