Standing at the plains of Arafat is widely considered the most essential pillar of Hajj. Failing to be present at Arafat within the designated time on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah renders the entire pilgrimage invalid. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) famously stated, "Hajj is Arafat" (Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 889). Consequently, pilgrims dedicate their full focus to this day, preparing with spiritual intensity and devotion. It is a mandatory act of worship.
According to the consensus of Islamic jurists, pilgrims must be present in the Arafat area at any point between the decline of the sun on the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah and the dawn of the 10th. While even a short presence fulfills the obligatory requirement, staying until sunset is considered Wajib according to the Hanafi school. Following the Sunnah, the Prophet (peace be upon him) remained at Arafat until sunset during his Farewell Hajj before departing for Muzdalifah (Sahih Muslim: 1218).The Day of Arafat is the finest time for repentance and the acceptance of prayers.
The most vital acts for pilgrims include persistent repentance and Istighfar. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafat" (Sahih Muslim: 1348). Therefore, pilgrims should approach Allah with humility and tears, seeking His infinite mercy. It is also a day to be deeply intentional about the state of one’s heart and soul.Reciting the Talbiyah and special prayers is crucial.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized a specific prayer for this day: "La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu, wa huwa ala kulli shai’in qadir." Alongside this, engaging in Dhikr, recitation of the Quran, and sending blessings upon the Prophet are highly rewarding. Those praying at Masjid Namirah follow the Sunnah of performing Zuhr and Asr prayers combined, while others perform them separately in their respective tents.Distractions should be avoided at all costs.
This day offers a profound training session for the soul. Surrounded by millions in the white garments of Ihram, pilgrims are reminded of the equality of humanity and the inevitability of the Hereafter. We pray that Allah accepts the Hajj of all pilgrims and grants those who are yearning the opportunity to be guests at His sacred House. Amin.
